Sherlock Holmes

There was a moment, about half an hour into the movie Batman Begins, when I realised I'd been watching the thing with a big, silly grin on my face. It was close to perfect - the essence of Batman, distilled and displayed on screen. It was, in short, exactly what a Batman film should be.

Amazingly enough, I had a similar experience while watching Sherlock Holmes! No, its not an adaptation of one of the many Sherlock Holmes stories. And it takes some large liberties with the canon of Holmes, but it did contain the essence of Holmes. And it is highly entertaining.

In the stories Holmes is much more of a 'Queensberry rules' boxer than a bare knuckle cage fighter, and he injects drugs rather than turning to drink when he's bored, but while the specifics may be different, the spirit of the thing is spot on.

And the dog is a piece of inspired genius!

Very, very well done Mr Ritchie. I'm hoping for equally great things in SH2...
